Introduction

A slow draining sink or tub is one of the most common plumbing hassles homeowners face. While store bought chemical cleaners promise quick fixes, they often contain corrosive ingredients that damage your pipes over time and pose safety risks to your family. Fortunately, you can easily clear most minor clogs using simple, non toxic household methods.

1. The Baking Soda and Vinegar Method

This natural combination creates an enzymatic reaction that breaks down buildup without harming plastic or copper pipes.

  • Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda directly into the drain.

  • Follow immediately with 1 cup of white vinegar.

  • Cover the drain opening with a plug or cloth to trap the reaction inside.

  • Let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes, then flush thoroughly with hot tap water.

2. Use a Manual Cup Plunger

Plunging creates direct mechanical suction to dislodge hair, soap scum, and debris trapped near the top of the drain.

  • Ensure there is enough water in the basin to cover the rubber cup of the plunger.

  • Block any overflow vents (like the small hole near the top of a bathroom sink) with a wet rag to seal the pressure.

  • Place the plunger firmly over the drain and pump vigorously up and down for 20 seconds.

3. Clear the P Trap Manually

If boiling water and plunging don't work, the blockage is likely resting in the curved pipe directly under your sink (the P trap).

  • Place a small bucket under the P trap to catch trapped water.

  • Unscrew the plastic slip nuts on both ends of the curved pipe by hand.

  • Inspect the trap, clear out any hair or buildup using a brush, and rinse it clean before reattaching.

When to Call a Professional

If water backs up into multiple fixtures simultaneously, smells like sewage, or refuses to clear after manual attempts, the clog may be deep inside your main sewer line. Attempting to force heavy equipment down your pipes can cause severe leaks.
